All you need to know about WAEC objective questions

In the WAEC examination, students are expected to attempt two sections of questions of different structures. The two question sections contain two types of questions, which include:

  • Objective questions
  • Theory questions.

  1. Nigeria
  2. Ghana
  3. The Gambia
  4. Sierra Leone
  5. Liberia

These five countries may be of different cultures, different landmass, or populations but they share something in common. They share a common official language.

The WAEC objective section

Earlier in this article, we spoke about the two major question sections in the WAEC examination, which are the theory and objective question sections. However, the objective question section is the main focus of this article.

The objective question section is a favorite examination section for so many WAEC students, and it’s also an important part of every WAEC examination. Every subject written in WAEC must feature an objective section, even if they don’t feature any other section. This is to tell you how important the objective is in the WAEC examination.

The structure of the WAEC objective section

The WAEC objective section is structured this way:

  1. A question may come in many formats, either to complete a sentence, fill in a quote, or a calculation problem (the question format differs from subject to subject).
  2. Multiple answer choices (to pick from).
  3. Shading the correct answer on your O.M.R sheet, using a pencil (HB pencil is recommended).

The above listed are the three major items involved in answering WAEC objective questions.

Things to note in WAEC objective answer section

  1. WAEC objective section is answered only on the O. M.R sheet, not on any other piece of paper.
  2. The correct answer to any question is to be shared thoroughly, using a pencil. WAEC recommended pencil is the HB pencil.
  3. The answers to a WAEC objective question are to be shaded after careful consideration and selection of the most probably correct answer to that question. This is to avoid shading and cleaning multiple options for one question in the WAEC objective question. Students are advised to adhere to this instruction, as the O.M.R sheet used in answering the WAEC objective section is marked by a machine, that is sensitive to depression. So, when multiple depressions are created on a particle row of any number, the machine may get confused and invalidate both the cleaned option and the shaded option. So careful thinking is encouraged before an answer is ticked in WAEC objective section.
  4. All WAEC objective questions are compulsory.
  5. There are 60 WAEC objective questions.

A remedy to WAEC Objective O.M.R sheet issue

WAEC instructions state that if any objective answer is considered wrong for any question, the incorrect option must be cleaned thoroughly, to render it insensitive to detection by the O.M.R marking machine, while the correct answer should be shaded thoroughly as well, to increase its detection to the O.M.R machine.

WAEC candidates should not be scared, as any O.M.R sheet, which cannot be marked by the machine can be marked manually, even though thorough shading can save WAEC officials from the additional work of marking the multiple choice answer sheet manually.

NB: O.M.R means Optical mark recognition.
